Plants vs. Zombies 2

International release August 15th

As an avid fan of the original Plants vs. Zombies game I was awaiting the release of the sequel as soon as it was announced. Prior to the release over here in jolly old England the game has been available for some time in Australia free of charge, I was convinced it was going to be a paid app here but thankfully PopCap haven't charged fans anything on the face of things, we'll get into the add on prices later.

The game has a different set up to the first, instead of just defending your house you're sent back in time to ancient Egypt in order for Crazy Dave to eat a taco again, it's stupid but gives you a good starting point. The zombies have changed, you've now got to deal with mummified zombies, explorer zombies and a couple still in their sarcophagus. You play through a selection of levels until you reach a giant star at the end, when you've got enough stars you proceed to the next world... Simple other than the fact you have to replay the levels in order to get enough stars to get to the next world, while being a great add on to the game and prolonging the play time available it becomes a little monotonous.

The next stage up is the pirate world,  you're now fighting zombies on a ships deck, there's cannons and swinging zombies aplenty. This is then followed up by the cowboy world, I haven't reached it yet but if it continues like previous two it'll be very similar with the exception of the zombies attire.

While it's not a bad game there's a lot of aspects which I feel they are screwing their loyal fans over with, one major part being you having to pay for certain plants which were given to you with the previous game. Another addition is plant food, when fed to one of your plants it exaggerates the usual behaviour, for example fed to the sunflower you get around 5 or 6 sunshines from it. There's also the yeti, if you manage to kill the yeti you get a lunch box with a prize in.

PopCap have said already that they plan to add another world to the game set in the future but I'm not sure when this will be released. They've really tried to add a lot in and keep it free but in a way this has just forced them to charge their fans to purchase more add ons to progress through the game, very much in the style of Candy Crush creator King.

It's a good game and a great way to kill time, a lot of plus points including not needing an internet connection to play and it actually being free, albeit slightly more difficult without some of the plants. Good effort and here's to hoping future updates and bug fixes will turn this from a good game to a great game.
